What I Wish I Knew Freshman Year

By Ashley Paskill on April 14, 2018

Freshman year is a tough time for many students. It can be tough to transition into a new school. For me, it was stressful adjusting to a new workload and social life. If I had known these things, I would have had a different perspective on things.

1. You will get through this

My freshman year was at a community college. The first college class I stepped foot in was an 8 a.m. philosophy class. I was interested at first, but it turned out to be one of the most difficult classes of my college classes. My professor was difficult to deal with and the workload was intense, even for the upperclassmen. I had never had such a hard time for the effort I put in, but I survived to tell the tale. It seemed like I would never survive the class, but I did, and would go on to survive other tough classes and circumstances.

2. Don’t sweat the small things

Not everything will go your way, and that is okay. I had a lot of things not work out the way I wanted my freshman year, from paper topics to classes I wanted to take. These things stressed me out in the process of dealing with them, but, in the long run, they ended up not being that big of a deal in the long run of my life. It is okay to be upset when these things happen, but keep in mind that these things are not that big of a deal and there are worse things that could happen.

3. Your hard work now will pay off later

Between classes and other things, I felt like I was constantly working on assignments and other people noticed this. I applied myself so much when I hit college, because I felt like I did not do so in high school and I wanted a different experience for college. Little did I know that my work ethic and drive would allow me to juggle a club, a part-time job, and classes my sophomore year. It would lead me to be inducted into Phi Theta Kappa, a community college honor society, and would lead me to get on Dean’s List my first semester. While I was stressed out, my accomplishments were well worth it in the end.

4. People who want to be in your life will make the effort

When we graduate high school, we often lose touch with all but a few people from high school. Sure, you may be Facebook friends, but you may stop talking and hanging out. I lost touch with a friend group I swore I would be friends with forever because we all lost touch and went separate ways. I met people my freshman year that I wanted in my life forever but it did not happen. While it is important to put in your fair share of work in relationships, if the other is not willing to, they are not worth the time.
